Annual herb, up to 40 cm tall, erect, branched, branches viscid, glandular-pubescent. Leaves alternate, simple, exstipulate, sessile, 2-4 cm x 0.7-1.5 cm, lanceolate, oblong-lanceolate, ovate-lanceolate, base subcordate, apex acute or acuminate, occasionally mucronate, both surfaces strigose, margin ciliate, trichomes multicellular. Flowers on flat-topped leafy cymes; pedicels 1-3 mm long, glandular-pubescent; bracts ca. 10 mm x 1 mm, linear, margin ciliate, glandular-pubescent. Flowers large, actinomorphic, bisexual, 5-merous, hypogynous, 1.5-2 cm long and 2-2.5 cm across, blue, red, pink, magenta, lavender, purple or white. Calyx ca. 10 mm long, tubular-campanulate, densely glandular-pubescent; tube 4-5 mm long, joints of sepals scarious; lobes 5- 6 mm long, lanceolate, spreading or reflexed, tips sharply pointed. Corolla salver-shaped, with a light-coloured eye in centre, petals twisted in bud; tube ca. 1.5 cm x 1.5-2 mm, glandular-pubescent; lobes 5, 10-12 mm x 8-11 mm, rhombic-ovate or obovate, glabrous; in ‘twinkle star’ cultivar, each corolla lobe is 3-7 lobed, the central being largest, giving star-shaped appearance to the flower. Stamens 5, epipetalous, inserted at different levels in corolla tube; anthers ca. 1.7 mm x 1 mm, oblong-ovate, dorsifixed; filaments very short, 0.5 mm long. Carpels 3, syncarpous; ovary inserted on a disk, sessile, ca. 1.5 mm x 1.5 mm, glabrous, 3-locular, one or few ovules per loculus, placentation axile; style slender, ca. 1 mm long; stigmas 3, linear, longer than style, ca. 2 mm long. Capsule globular, ca. 3 mm in diameter, 3-valved, usually shed before dehiscing. Seeds 3-5.
